Visualizing Deletion Discussions on Wikipedia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba\u00a0notabilia.net<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notabilia<\/a>\u00a0visualizes the longest\u00a0Article for Deletion discussions<\/em>\u00a0in the English Wikipedia. It’s a collaboration with\u00a0Moritz Stefaner<\/a>\u00a0(visualization) and\u00a0Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia<\/a>\u00a0(data analysis) and it was launched on the occasion of the\u00a010th Anniversary of Wikipedia<\/a>. Article for Deletion (AfD) discussions are represented by a thread starting at the bottom center of the screen. Each time a user recommends to\u00a0keep, merge, or redirect<\/em>\u00a0the article a green segment leaning towards the left is added. Each time a user rec\u00adommends to\u00a0delete<\/em>\u00a0the article a red segment leaning towards the right is added. As the dis\u00adcussion progresses, the length of the segments as well as the angle slowly decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notabilia<\/a> is the winner of the interactive visualization gold prize at the Information is Beautiful Awards<\/em> (2012) and was listed by Co.Design<\/em> among the “22 best infographics of 2011”. It was part of the InForm<\/em> exhibit (2011) at the Adobe Museum of Digital Media<\/em> and of the FutureEverything Art Exhibition<\/em> in Manchester (2012). It has been featured by The Guardian<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, Co.Design<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, BoingBoing<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, Creative Review<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation<\/em> (NRK)\u00b0<\/a>, Information Esthetics<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, FlowingData<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, DataVisualization.ch<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, NetzPolitik<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, Visualizing.org<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, BigThink<\/em>,\u00b0<\/a>, Bright Magazine<\/em> (38\/2011)\u00b0<\/a>, Page Magazine<\/em> (6\/2011)\u00b0<\/a>, Information Architects<\/em>\u00b0<\/a>, PopTech<\/em>\u00b0<\/a> and Zooz Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just in time for Wikipedia\u2019s forth\u00adcom\u00ading tenth anniver\u00adsary, two researchers \u2013 Dario Tara\u00adborelli and Gio\u00advanni Luca Ciampaglia \u2013 approached me for a coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion on visu\u00adal\u00adiz\u00ading the dis\u00adcus\u00adsions around arti\u00adcle dele\u00adtions on Wikipedia. The results are online at notabilia.net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I came up with a tree visu\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtion, where an Arti\u00adcle for Dele\u00adtion dis\u00adcus\u00adsion is rep\u00adre\u00adsented by a thread start\u00ading at the bot\u00adtom cen\u00adter. Each time a user rec\u00adom\u00admends to keep, merge, or redi\u00adrect the arti\u00adcle a green seg\u00adment lean\u00ading towards the left is added. Each time a user rec\u00adom\u00admends to delete the arti\u00adcle a red seg\u00adment lean\u00ading towards the right is added. As the dis\u00adcus\u00adsion pro\u00adgresses, the length of the seg\u00adments as well as the angle slowly decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the visu\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtions, I tried to cap\u00adture the ten\u00adsion between chaos and order inher\u00adent to the dis\u00adcus\u00adsions, and pro\u00advide a nice serendip\u00adity inter\u00adface as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
